Leaf Activities for Preschool

Leaf and Fall Activities for Preschool
If you live in an area with changing seasons, your kids are in observation overload.  We LOVE fall.  We spend a lot of time outdoors picking up leaves and acorns.  Our Leaf Unit was just what we needed.

For our learning warm-up we headed outside on an "Autumn Hunt."  As we found the items on our checklist we crossed them off.  We put the ones that would fit into our bag.

We also worked on measuring using maple leaves for our unit.  This would be a cute class book.  V was 7 leaves tall.

Next we compared and contrasted leaves by size.  First V had to sort lots of leaves as small, medium and large.  I purposely made the leaves bright colors.  Children naturally want to sort by color so she really had to think about it as she sorted.

We are lucky to have a variety of colored leaves in our area.  This cut Leaf Colors reproducible was a great way to match and discuss colors.  Prior to the activity I underlined the color word with the matching color.  V practiced tracking print by pointing at each word and then "read" the color word.  Then, she colored the leaf the matching color.

Our favorite book to read in the fall is There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed some Leaves.  V loved retelling the story with this cute story propThis was great for practicing sequence.

We also had fun with creating a leaf collage, and water painting leaves.  Prior to the activity, I wrote V's name with a white crayon.  She had a blast finding it and identifying the letters in her name.

We had so much fun with this unit.  We hope you like it too!
